Ivera (Ivermectin) is an anti-parasitic medication used to treat certain types of parasitic infections. Ivera is available in generic form and over the counter. Ivera is used to treat strongyloidiasis (threadworm; infection with a type of roundworm that enters the body through the skin, moves through the airways and settles in the intestines). Ivera is also used to treat onchocerciasis (river blindness; infection with a type of roundworm that enters the body through the bite of a blackfly that lives near fast-flowing rivers). Ivera is in a class of medications called anthelmintics. It works by killing the parasites. Generic Ivera is not available in the United States. To take Ivera oral suspension (liquid): Shake the bottle well just before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. The oral suspension is concentrated. Be sure to dilute it with water as directed on the medicine label. To take Ivera oral tablet: Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. To take Ivera oral tablet (disintegrating): Place the tablet on your tongue. Allow it to dissolve in your mouth without chewing. To ensure that you get a correct dose, measure the liquid form of Ivera with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist where you can get one. Ivera is usually taken as a single dose. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. You will need to have frequent medical tests. Your vision may need to be checked before and after you take Ivera. Take Ivera on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse. Use Ivera as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. What happens if I overdose? Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. What should I avoid? Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity. Ivera side effects Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have: vision problems, eye pain or redness, seeing halos around lights; fast or pounding heartbeats, feeling short of breath; swelling in your legs or feet; weakness, tired feeling, weight loss; fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms; or nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). Common Ivera side effects may include: mild skin rash; headache; dizziness, drowsiness; nausea, upset stomach; mild muscle or joint pain; mild hair loss; or tingling or numbness in your hands or feet.
